Terroir.

TRADITION.

CURIOSITY.

The terroir of Møn is known for it's chalk and limestone underground combined with south facing soft hills towards the sea, as the bedrock of its viticultural activity.

The island's iconic white cliffs, known as Møns Klint, are composed of this chalk, a remnant of ancient seabeds formed millions of years ago.

These chalky soils are particularly beneficial for wine growing, as they provide excellent drainage, which is crucial in a region with frequent rainfall, and add a distinctive minerality to wines grown here.

The intensive sunlight, reflected by the sea and the labour intensive work to keep "Black soil" in the vineyards, provides more sunlight and heat than most places in Denmark. The Calcium (Kalk) and sunlight (Lumen) is the verry essence of our wines;

KALUM WINERY.

The combination of these element, provides fruitful wines with elegant acidity and beautilful minerality.

OUR TERROIR

Kalum Winery was originally called BRUT de MØN, and was founded by Hans Christian Amberg in 2018.

With years of experience from Burgundy, and award-winning Aligote & Pinot Noir on his résumé, his return to Denmark was defined by where he would be most likely to successfully grow wine again.
He decided to settle on the beautiful island of Møn.

The first vintage of BRUT de MØN was harvested in 2021, based on Johanniter, Calardis Blanc & Souvignier Gris.

These wines we have named our "Dawn Edition", and will be in sale from November 2024.

THE PAST

THE PRESENT

BRUT de MØN was originally based on 3,5HA of Cool- Climate-Friendly grape varieties (PIWI).

In 2021 new investors joined the winery in the quest for creating exceptional wines, and a new strategy was laid out. The original grape varieties were exchanged for classic vinifera varieties, and more land was laid out for vineyeards.

Today 5 families have invested in the vineyard and in 2024 the name changed to Kalum Winery, celebrating the limestone (in Danish "KALK") and the intensive reflection of the sunlight  (in Latin "LUMEN")

THE FUTURE

Kalum Winery has now expanded the Vineyards to 16HA of classic Champagne grapes; Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier. Our ambition is to produce high quality still wine and Traditional Method Sparkling Wine. With climate changes ahead, respect for traditions and curiousity for modern technology, it is our aim to produce the best Cool Climate alternative to Champagne. First vintage is expected to release in 2027.Our "Dawn Edition" will remain as a tribute to the beginning of Kalum Winery, and is expected to produce one barrique of Souvignier Gris Limited Edition each year.

Working in the vineyards is labour intensive year round. Each plant will be visited 18-20 times during a year; pruning, binding, trimming, and cultivating during the spring and summer, harvest in the fall, and then winter pruning and spring preparation. The circle of life is very visible in the vineyards, and most of our work is done by hand.

Viticulture is a mixture of craftmanship, tradition, curiousity and terroir. Hence our team of local experinced farmers and our team of wine makers, with years of viticultural experience, work closely together to create the synergy between the knowledge of local climate, the traditional grapes and the characteristics of our specific soil....
